Our final edited music video

This is the suceesful outcome of our music video but before uploading it on our blog i relised somone has played around at the end of the song which has caused the lip syncing to go out the place at the end.

Evaluation

How did you use media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?
We used establishing shots around Manchester for example at the beginning this was done to set the scene, location and atmosphere.
The equipment we used when filming was a Camera and Tripod.
On the new Apple Computer we used a programme called Final Cut Pro, we used the blur tool throughout the video, the colour theme we used for our video and CD cover and Magazine were orange and black theme throughout. This was to make it look more professional then using random colours at any times.
In the editing section one type of edit is called Cross dissolve; this was used quite a lot of times throughout the video as it’s a very slow pace video and it went along well and made it continuous throughout the video.
We also linked the shots to the music lyrics, for example Maria sings the lyrics throughout the video and we have the scenes matching the music lyrics.
We used Photoshop to create the CD cover and to create the magazine advert. Before creating the CD cover we researched into women singers such as Brittany Spears herself, Rihanna and Mariah Carey and so on, we found that in most of the CD covers, the Singer herself is placed at the front of the CD Cover with her name on it, also we chose the shot very carefully which we wanted to use as the CD cover as it looked a very professional clean shot
Another type of technology we used was a Projector, when she is remerging her past memories by looking at a home video they created. This was a very unique idea that we had chosen as not a lot of people would have come across this idea before.
We kept changing the contrast throughout the video, this was done so it looks more sharper, there were many other options we could choose from such as adding a noise effect, but this would have made it looked to amateurish. Most of the memories there are in the video of them both together, makes it more emotional in the video. Each shot we looked at carefully and changed bits around that needed changing to fit in perfectly with the whole of the video.
We have nearly edited each second of the timeline, this was to go with the slow pace and rhythm. For example we got different types of shots and angles, each clip represents the way she is thinking and feeling.

Final magazine advert

This is my magazine advert. I stuck to the sunset theme and used an external image which show the artist at an mysterious location. The theme black and orange is used. I added some additional information from my ruff plan to inform the audience about the new alum. The colours of the font are different colours of the sunset. And the white highlighted word have an importance and stand out. The image at the bottom right of the corner is an image of the artist. This is used to promote her website. I also put on the record labels of the album so they could be promoted as well as the album and with research i found out that some album adverts feature the record label. To show what the artist represents.

Editing of Magazine

I created the background image on Microsoft word by getting access to a sunset image and adding a black background. I then pasted this into paint this is where i added the small image of the artist in the right hand corner. In photoshop i added the CD cover and added text using different colours of the sunset which again relates with the theme. I also copy and pasted the logos of the record onto the magazine page.
The magazine cover was probably the easiest and less time consuming to do probably because by the time i started editing the magazine advert i was quite experienced with the mac and the software photoshop. So it became easier to use. And i was more familiar withe tools like image mask which was used when editing both the magazine advert and CdD covers.

Magazine advert ideas

This is a plan of the magazine cover which will promote the CD and it will include a picture of the sunsetting in an unknown location of the artist. This rough copy is an idea with my album cover on the magazine page some information about CD.

This is a rough copy of how i expect my magazine page to turn out to look like.

Back cover of CD and inside

The back of the CD cover is of the sunsetting on some buildings which is an extreme long shot and an establishing shot in the video. The font on the back represent sunset as it starts of light and gets darker and darker. I decided to use the orange and black theme because it relates to the song and are to very bold contrasting colours.

Inside the CD album was the main chorus written of song. The negative image was powerful to use as it portrays love and goes with the colour sceme of the CD album.

Front cover of CD album

Analysis of CD cover

Other CD covers are black and white or in colour whereas i used both elements to make the Cd look unique and to make it look bold and standout. I experimented with allot of affects to create this look from the gradient tool to blur. Even the wings has an effect to make it stand out more and look out of the ordinary.

Idea of CD abum

This is the final idea i sketched out. I decide to use the images in the music video only because i was promoting that single in the album and i personally felt that the images were strong enough to use.

Image 1: This is the front of the CD cover i decided to use the shot of me looking over my shoulder as and angel as i thought it looked mystical and natural lighting is used from the sun so It looks more appealing. It will be an interesting image to use in terms of the use of image. The font at the bottom of the CD cover is inspired by the font used in one of the controversial CD cover of all time which is Rage against the machine. I put a butterfly next to my name because it reflects back to the music video and the whole concept of wings. Additionally making the cover look more girly.

Image 2: This is the back of the CD cover which is the extreme long shot of the sunset on the black buildings. I think this image is strong enough to be used and not much is going on in this picture so the audience can concentrate on the songs in the album rather than the visual at the back. I also put some record labels on which Britney spears was with Sony.

Image 3 and 4: These are the inside covers of my CD album simply because most of the songs are about love in the album. And this image shows it. I decided to have one hand one one image and the other on the other image. I put the main verse inside the album because when researched most CD albums have lyrics inside the album so i used the one chorus which is most affective. And the font used is inside the CD album is the same for the outside.

I have decided the colour sceme for the CD album will be Black and orange alike the song giving it a very warm feeling.

Famous Cd covers of all time

Here are some of the most famous, influential and unique CD covers of all time i researched on. This source of information is taken externally.

The original: How the Beatles' Abbey Road album cover originally looked

Their record label said it wouldn't sell because it did not feature the names of the band or the LP.
But 40 years on and 12million sales later, the most famous album cover of all time has been copied all over the world.
Dozens of bands - ranging from Booker T & The MGs to the puppet characters from TVs Sesame Street - have recreated their own versions of John, Paul, George and Ringo striding across the zebra crossing outside the Abbey Road studios on August 8, 1969.

The cover illustration was created by German-born bassist and artist Klaus Voormann, one of the Beatles' oldest friends from their days at the Star Club in Hamburg. Voormann's illustration, part line drawing and part collage, included photographs by Robert Whitaker, who also took the back cover photographs and many other images of the group between 1964 and 1966, such as the infamous "butcher cover" for Yesterday and Today. Voormann's own photo as well as his name (Klaus O. W. Voormann) is worked into Harrison's hair on the right-hand side of the cover. In the Revolver cover appearing in his artwork for Anthology 3, he replaced this image with a more recent photo. Harrison's Revolver image was seen again on his single release of "When We Was Fab" along with an updated version of the same image.
The title "Revolver", like "Rubber Soul" before it, is a pun, referring both to a kind of handgun as well as the "revolving" motion of the record as it is played on a turntable. The Beatles had a difficult time coming up with this title.

Considering there were hundreds of titles submitted it's a little surprising a top vote getter did surface, but the Beatles Sgt. Pepper led all others as the top album cover of all time. Proving record sales aren't a factor when it comes to appreciating cover art, the next highest vote went to Herb Alpert's, Whipped Cream and Other Delights. The Beatles sold over 11 million copies of their record; Herb's sold just 500,000 copies. Yet ask a solidly Baby Boomer male to name a couple of all time favorite album covers and you can bet you'll see that gleam in the eye as you hear a tale of the girl in whipped cream long before you hear about those Beatle jackets.

Rage Against the Machine is the debut studio album by alternative metal band Rage Against the Machine.[10] The album was released on November 11, 1992. The songs on Rage Against the Machine all feature political messages. The album went to #1 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart, and #45 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. The cover features a photo of Thích Quảng Đức, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, burning himself to death in Saigon in 1963. The monk was protesting President Ngô Đình Diệm's administration for oppressing the Buddhist religion. The photograph drew international attention and persuaded U.S. President John F. Kennedy to withdraw support of the Ngô Đình Diệm's government. It was taken by Associated Press correspondent Malcolm Browne; a similar photograph earned the award of World Press Photo of the Year in 1963.

History of CD covers

Before starting to plan our Cd cover i thought it would be better to research on the history of CD covers as i would get a better understanding of them.

An album cover is the front of the packaging of a commercially-released audio recording product, or album. The term can refer to either the printed cardboard covers typically used to package sets of 10" and 12" 78 rpm records, single and sets of 12" LPs, sets of 45 rpm records (either in several connected sleeves or a box), or the front-facing panel of a CD package, and, increasingly, the primary image accompanying a digital download of the album, or of its individual tracks.
The cover serves 3 main purposes:
To advertise the contents of the music product.
To convey the artistic aspirations of the original artists (see Cover art and Alex Steinweiss).
In reproductions of the artwork, to serve as a primary image in the promotional efforts surrounding the product, as an identifiable image associated with it.
Also, in the case of all types of records, it also serves as part of the protective sleeve.

The cover became an important part of the culture of music at the time. As a marketing tool and an expression of artistic intent, gatefold covers, (a folded double cover), and inserts, often with lyric sheets, made the album cover a desirable artifact in its own right. Notable examples are The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band which had cut-out inserts, lyrics, a gatefold sleeve though a single album; and Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon which had gatefold, lyrics, no title on the sleeve and poster inserts.
The importance of cover design was such that some artists specialised or gained fame through their work, notably the design team Hipgnosis (through their work on Pink Floyd albums amongst others) and Roger Dean famous for his Yes and Greenslade covers, Cal Schenkel for Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica and Frank Zappa's We're Only in It For the Money.
The talents of many photographers and illustrators from both inside and outside of the music industry have been used to produce a vast array of memorable LP/CD covers.

Album covers were primarily made from cardboard, and as such, were prone to either peeling at the edges and accumulating general damage through continual use. Because LP's inside these alum covers were also prone to damage and scratching, inserts were developed to slip over them. These were usually made from paper, and slipped inside the main Album Sleeve.
The information displayed on these sleeves was usually the band name, album title, band members and other related information, as well as the recording studio and/or recording studio. There may also be information to advertise the band, along side the album artwork.
As time went on audio tapes were used along-side Vinyl LP's and singles. The LP's demise came along around the 90's when CD's came along - which were smaller and more robust. Now, in 2008, compact disc albums still use imagery and designs to advertise the bands. Tapes are still being used, but only on a very limited scale – at least in the western world, because many old cars use tape cassette players.

A CD Cover has become a representation of the bands' music. Even though 80% of music is now bought online, the accompanying CD artwork is still being used - as is still likely to continue into the future.

The people that would buy mainly singles started buying albums and the art work on the covers of these was as intricate as the music sometimes. For example, when we sold the Beatles 1965 album it does not have a name on it; it doesn't have a title or anything. It's just has picture of the four Beatles and they have slightly longer hair and these brown suede jackets and that kind of signaled the kind of culture blooming at that time. People started moving forward with the album art and the Beatles' "Sergeant Pepper and the Lonely Hearts Club Band" was a statement at the time. The kind of photo montage of pictures that they had going there started somewhat of a trend. People really started embracing the album art and making that package simply more than just a picture; it really became a presentation to go along with the sound that you were hearing. And many bands all over the world, in the US and in Europe especially, would really take great care with their album art.For the Beatles specifically it was Peter Blake who did the photo and staged it. With a couple of associates like photographer Michael Cooper, he actually took the picture and then [included] some wax figures by Madame Tussauds of the Beatles themselves. They would kind of play with that and kind of suggest things and that cover came about that way. Peter Blake was an English artist. Then they would get friends, San Francisco artists, to do their album art and their first few records were entirely psychedelic with all sorts of figures and swirling colors and all that.

Album cover for Britney Spears "Everytime"

This is the album cover for Britney Spears "Everytime" which is the song that we are doing.
It is in an colourful image of her sitting on a flower. Showing her girly and mystical side. The colour scheme is shocking pins to again show her femanity as a female singer. Her body language is quite trong and she is directly looking at the audience giving them eyecontact making her seem powerful. She also looks quite seductive.

So when creating our CD cover we could try and copy certain aspects of this image such as having strong images which we have also used in our video.

Why our music video is different

Our music video shows the sunset at the beginning and at the end of the song to emphasize on a continuous long day. The beginning of the journey the audience sees and the end of the journey with the story told.No other music video in this genre has used this idea and with the sunset used at the beginning and end of the song exposes the sadness and innocence of the song.

We used a a black and white tone in some parts of the video to achieve a profession looking video and to add a serious tone to the video when a lyric is said for example "your haunting me" shows the seriousness of the song. We use allot of cross dissolve and fading in and out at the end of the song so our shots run smoothly and flow into each other. The fade out t the end gives it more of a professional look of the video.

Comparing orginal video of "Everytime" to our music video

The original music video contains a narrative of Briney Spears feeling trapped with the celebrity status and a day in her life with a sad ending of death but being reborn free.

We have broaded this and created allot more in the music video as we don't just stick to using shots of one narrative and also, in a way we have challenged the fact as i used a narrative that my target audience could relate to the everyday situations, i also added an fictional reference of an angel to go with the lyrics, and created allot more scene that Britney Spears original video. We build on the idea that the actions of the couple would link in with the lyrics and I think it works very well as it is slow paced at time to go with the song which is a slow sad sang. The shots lasting 3-7 seconds which is a contrast to fast paced dancing tracks. But the long shots go well with the genre and give a chance for the audience to familiarise with whats happening in the song.

At times its disjuncture in the music video but mostly our shots relate to our lyrics for example where she is writing on the piece of paper "i think i need you baby" this is in the middle of the song and it is showing her desperation towards him so she expresses it by writing her feelings out.I edited this shot by cropping one of the images and puting it ontop o the other image and made it transparent with the transparent tool.

One of the biggest lyrics which relate to our video is when the female lead has wings on and the lyrics are "i fall without my wings" the female lead has actually got wings on creating a more realistic feel.

In some music videos like "no air" from Jordan Sparks and Chris Brown both characters the characters are quite equal so both genders have been presented as equal but looking at other videos like "if i were a boy" by Beyonce one character is stronger than the other and powerful by portraying an important message o the audience from one point of view i used this concept as i could relate to this and wanted to show the female lead as a influential relatable character which the audience could emphasize with like Beyonce in her song.
If i had to do the music video again i would probably have more shots with lip syncing init.
My favourite part of the whole music video is the angel theme as it is creative with the natural sunlight used and no affects. Its at a affectiv location with a contrasting background.
What i enjoyed most about the video was filming it as the whole process was done indivdually by me and from this i learned that you can still be sucessful if you put your mind on something. Although i did feel like giving up at some stages but the outcome was very sucessful.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

We printed out 15 questionnaires so people can answer them so we can get feedback about the music video.
Open questions included:
-What did you like about the music video?
-Do you think the characters performed realistically in the video?
-Was there any part you didn’t like?
-How could the music video be improved with moretime?
- What do you think the target audience for the song is?

The results we gained from the questionnaire:
Most people liked the lip syncing and the angel theme of the song as it went withe visuals really well. From the audience feedback majority of the audience said the characters performed realistically and were relatable. The majority of the audience said the lip syncing could have been better towards the end of the song.
Also on average the age group people think it appeals to teenagers to young adults and mainly females becuase of the whole naraive of the song.More females were able to relate to the video more

Research on artist with similar genre

These CD album covers are under the genre we are doing. These are some of the ones we looked at while researching before creating our CD album cover. As you notice mainly dark colours are used on the CD covers, mainly they are black and white. So we decided to be a little different and use the colour theme which is used throughout the video. So our final idea was to have a black and white background with colour usage on Maria and the sun rays.

Roles

Being in a team me and Neelam had to share out the roles we played
Actors: Toqeer Ahmed Jenny Azam Maria Rafiq (me)
Director: Maria Rafiq (me)Neelam Irshad
Producer: Maria Rafiq (me)
Cameraman: Maria Rafiq (me) Neelam Irshad Editor:Maria Rafiq (me)

Actors: As actors weren;'t provided with costumes but figured out what would look best for the music video in the current clothes we have got.As actors we had to act out various scenes which was really difficult as our facial expression had to be right with no laughter because it being a sad music video.

Director: Through research of different music videos me and Neelam came up with creative ideas to make our music video look different.

Producer: As the producer i had to pay for 'Everytime';
The long white dress- £60
Glass globe-£12
Cards: £2
white shirt - £20
Wings-£8
Total costs being £108 to produce this music video.

Cameraman: At some stages i found it quite difficult to film alone and be the actor in the filming but i learned alot from that experienc. But Neelam soon helped with some other shots like the projector ones which were done in quicker time and was much easier to film becuase there being two of us.

Research

-After watching a number of other music videos I was inspired by the idea Jay Sean's- Stay, he is using a projector to remember his love.
The projector makes the video look more appealing and interesting making us feel Jay Sean's emotion as he looks back on past memories.
-I have noticed in music videos associated with heartbreak, such as Nancy Ajram- Entih Eh, Esmees Denters- " Outta here" and Hi;ary Duff - "Stranger"
Also most shots in some of the songs were quite long expressing feeling and going with the slow paced tone.
-lose ups are used to express emotion and some music videos correlate to the lyrics of the songs.

Inspirations

By watching allot of other videos based around the same genre we got allot of inspirations such as
Jay Sean - Stay
Esmee Denters- get me outta here
Hilary duff- Stranger
Nancy Ajram -Entih Eh
which are all songs based around heartbreaks.

*(number 1 being an artists video in comparison to mine which is number 2)*

In Jay Sean's "stay", Jay Sean has a projector to reflect back on him and his girlfriend. I decided to use this as well but use it in some parts of the video rather than most of the video. I found the projector effective to use as it shows the lover reflecting back on good times and expresses the characters feelings and emotion through the projector. This is why i used it to show how my character felt.

Also in Esmee Denters "outta here2 she is holding a laptop looking at her boyfriends pictures i decided to use this but with a computer because my audience was like Esmee Denters a younger generation. And modern technology is a way to relate to that.

In some of the videos there was allot of shots of the main person lip syncing and a narrative being shown to explain the narrative. Our music video also consists of a range of different shots such as close up, mid shots and long shots.

The shots below are taken from the music video "Enta Eh"

Similarities of where the girl is singing around the house alike my idea of me roaming around the house to express my feelings and to feel my loves presense in the house.

Extreme close ups of the girls face in our music video are used to express her emotion and the long and mid shots showing the girl to create a feel of the audience presence from different angles. Pictures below show the similarity of our music video compared to another to show how characters are introduced.

Some videos set the scene by having extreme long shots/establishing shots alike mine which usually create the atmosphere with the audience. Such as the image below creates an atmosphere as busy night in the city. But mine shows a calm place creating a warm feeling and atmosphere.

Differences

Our music video is completely different to Britney Spears video as i have chosen a narrative the audience can relate to in everyday situations. Also i used a narrative which the audience could imagine actually Britney Spears actually doing with her choice of different emotional role plays in her songs.
Also comparing our music to Jay Sean "stay" the filming is done still to achieve the look that the audience are not part of the relationship between the girl and boy and are watching it from a thirds prospective. Whereas some parts of my filming like the 90 degree whip pan is a bit shaky to create the feeling of the audience being present with the characters.
To be original i used a narrative containing many scenes rather than just one or two long ones throughout the song. For example in Jay San's stay his narrative is mainly in his flat whereas my narrative is at so many different locations to show more drama and stop my audience from getting bored. I decide to keep my shots only with 20 people so the audience can engage with these 2 people rather than other external factors. In addition in most songs the narrative has a lot less external factors to the audience interacted with the situation.

Targetted audience

Our music video appeals more to a younger generation aged 16 - 28 as it is more that generation that can relate to that sort of situation. Also the characters used in the music video are young so a young generation both female and male are represented in this music video.
It is a music video for both males and females to relate to as female audience will be able to relate to the characters situation more than males. And males can relate to the male situation of a relationship and can also see a girls point of view. The whole secondary purpose of the video is to entertain both gender audiences which they can relate to as relationships are a common factor in this world.

Final stage of editing

Another major problem occurred most of our work got deleted again but this time our footage was on there it just had to be put in order and edited from where we were before.

We are now reaching the end of completing our music video. At this stage we know which footage goes where in our song and the timeline is mostly complete and we have all of our shots and cuts in the right place.
So far we have used the blur effect, lens flare, glow effect and we have experimented with the contrast and brightness of the clip I did allot of editing today using different effects like the black and white tone with cross dissolves. I changed the speed of some clips making them faster for example the shot where the room gets all dark. From 2 hours to 6 seconds. When changing speed it came out to be really affective. I also used a sepia tone of orange in a butterfly shot so it goes with the genre of a sunset. Being an angel i used the blur tool in some parts to portray the angel as mysterious.I also used to split screens this was by cropping the image and changing the position of it with image and wire frame. I mainly used a black and white tone with some shots dissolving to the room colour to show the mood of the song becuase it is serious and gives a gloomy affect. I also used alot of crossdissolves as they were really affective with many shots and gav it a slow tone. I also changed speeds with many shots makeing them slower or faster to make it seem more professional.
Finally i finished all the editing an am very proud with the final outcome.

Different Shot Locations (Mise-en-scene)

Chester Zoo:
We got a variety of different shots from Chester Zoo this was done on Mary Ward Day. The main two shots which were used in the video were of the lake and the butterfly.

Bedroom:
This was used mainly throughout the whole of the video as it was mainly based in there, as she is remembering the past and now spends most of her time in there because of the state she is in. Also she reflects back on her past memories.

Bridge-
This is part of her flashbacks and memories with him being together and then all of sudden she is by herself without him wrapping his arms around.

Manchester Arndale-
Maria is dressed as a fairy; this is to show her innocence as she is dressed in all white and with wings. She is also at a very high point and she takes a glimpse down, this ironically looks as though she is looking at her problems and troubles in life.

Classroom-
This was of the projector shot, we thought this would be a very unique shot and very creative as it shows the different colours. It’s also a very imaginative idea of how to reflect back on her memories.

Restaurant-
Her boyfriend is spending time with another girl gone to dine put with her however because she wants to see how he is she tries ringing him and he ends up seeing she’s ringing so rejects the call.

Shot list

Establishing shot- This was of the Sunset at the beginning of the song, this was done so it sets the atmosphere.

Low Angle-this is to show face expression and how she’s feeling also the darkness on her face and the tone of colour used for that shot.

Mid Shot- this is on the bridge of both of the boy and the girl when they are holding hands this was done to reflect on the past memories and how she feels lonely without his presence.

Rule Of thirds- when Maria is sitting near the window sill, we have done this by simply centring the subject which is Maria these points create more tension, energy and interest in the composition.

90 Degree rule- this is done in the bedroom and misses one wall so looks as though its one long wall. It’s done so it looks continuous instead of creating a jump.

Over shoulder shot- this was on top of Manchester Arndale to show the characters point of view as she reflects and looks down at her problems.

Extreme Close Up- of the projector, this created different colours and gave the shot a dreamier type of effect.

High Angle- this is of the mobile when she rings her boyfriend and he rejects her call this is done by the camera looking down on the subject which is the mobile and it points the focus on it.
Split Screen- This is when she’s leaning against the wall on either side, the space of the frame is split in to two frames.

Low Angle- When she is walking around the room, this looks very effective, as we trying to create the timeless effect, so the audience have sympathy for her.
Extreme Close up- this is of the butterfly, it shows detail of the butterfly, however it is largely used to emphasizes her emotional state.

Effects and Transitions

Effects - We looked through the different effects to see which one would look best for our video.
We discovered some didn't fit our genre like the 'earthquake' affect and would make the music video look amateurish. I personally liked the lens flare and think it would go well in some parts of the video as we have an imaginary fictional theme in some parts of the filming and it would look good with the shots on top of each other making the image look bigger perhaps the glass globe or on the wings.
We also looked at the sepia tone as it has an orange feel which would go well with our sunset theme.
Transitions - I liked the cross dissolve and which could be used frequently through out our music video so one clip runs into the other smoothly.

rough cut and teacher feedback

Finishing our rough cut was quite hard as i wasn't aware of using final cut pro at all, by myself i learned many technique affects and transitions i never knew how to use.
After receiving the teacher feedback. The Mr Fordom said our footage was okay but could look much more better with some more editing and some more shots at the end.

So because of time running out i went to Arndale to shoot the following shots
1. writing lyrics on paper
2. close up of written lyrics
3. low angle shot of me on the bus
4. mid shot of the bus window
5. mid shot of me waling into the rain
6. point of view shot of my shoes walking in poodles
7. close up shot of birthday cards by the male lead in my hand
8. mid shot of card floating in poodle
9. close up shot of card in puddle

These were the extra shots i done in the space of 2 hours on top of Arndale so i could get some more privacy in where i was filming and the extra footage we need in our filming.
